Make sure the candle burns evenly the first time you light it.
When you light a candle for the first time, be sure to let it burn for a while, you want to ensure the surface of the candle melts before you put it out. Why? You could end up with Tunneling. See the FAQ's for a description of tunneling.
Keep your candle clean
You may notice after a few burns, soot and other debris will accumulate in the jar. Clean them out! These debris can ignite and produce multiple flames and popping. This is very dangerous and can cause the candle to overheat and possibly explode as well as lighting the entire surface of the candle on fire.
Trim your Wick
Before you light your candle always make sure the wick is cut down to 1/4 inch. Use scissors or wick trimmers to neatly trim. Do not trim too short or the wick can submerge under the melted wax rendering the candle un-usable.
Retire Your Candles on Time
You should stop using a candle before it completely runs out of wax. If you let your candle burn all the way down to the glass it could overheat.
Watch out for mushrooms
If you ever see a candle wick topped with something that looks like a burnt piece of popcorn, this is called a mushroom. Remove mushrooms before relighting your candle otherwise you will have a large smokey flame.
